I might be able to narrow it down a little more than above poster.

I pretty much only desire to read Robert Jordan's works, but other favorites include:

Orson Scott Card
Piers Anthony (funny stuff)
Isaac Asimov
Fred Saberhagen
Arthur C. Clarke

and many more...

My name is Anita Blake. Vampires call me The Executioner. What I call them isn't repeatable. Ever since the Supreme Court granted the undead equal rights, most people think vampires are just ordinary folks with fangs. I know better. I've seen their victims. I carry the scars...

But now a serial killer is murdering vampires -- and the most powerful bloodsucker in town wants me to find the killer...

My favourite author? er... it would be
Aristophanes (Greek comic playwright - filled with belly laughs)
Homer ("As Dawn appeared, fresh and rosey-fingered")
Virgil (very emotional and strangely relevant) "i sing of arms and of the man"
and Koushun Takami (because of Battle Royale)

My favorite? Douglas Adams without a doubt(can't believe no one mentioned him yet)

Honorable mentions are Piers Anthony (Xanth Rocks and Incarnations was incredible)
Robert Aspirin (Spellsinger series), other than them I have way too many authors I enjoy.

Douglas Adams.. "Ah, the long dark tea time of the soul." It's not a book, it's a qoute. LOVED the entire Hitchhikers' series, but mostly Resturant At The End Of The Universe and Mostly Harmless.

I'm starting to get into Stephan King, too - so far, The Talisman, Dreamcatcher and The Stand have made their way into my favourites.

My top 5.

1. George R.R. Martin. A song of ice and fire blew me away. I love it.

2. Robert Jordan. Wheel of time, need I say more? Woot for Mat! :P

3. Terry Goodkind. The Sword of Truth series..more like a tv series but still good.

4. Douglas Adams. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Genious.

5. Stephen King. The talisman, The Stand, The Shining, Thinner, etc.. the list goes on.
